What Type Of Dentist Do You Need?

Posted on: 14 July 2015

If you need dental work done, there are many types of dentists that you might need to visit. Read on to find out which type of dentist can help you.

Pediatric Dentist

If the patient is a child, you might consider seeing a pediatric dentist first. Especially for young children, a pediatric dentist can be helpful in establishing early dental routines. Some of the initial visits to the pediatric dentist will involve helping the child get comfortable at a dentist's office. If your child has already been to the dentist many times, you might be ready to transition into a regular care facility.

General Dentist

A general dentist can handle a wide range of dental issues, and the general dentist also acts as a gatekeeper to recommend other types of specialists. Your dentist will be responsible for providing checkups, diagnosing dental issues, doing fillings, and sometimes even providing cosmetic dentistry treatments. If you are unsure of what type of dentist to see, then a general dentist appointment will help you to figure out a treatment plan.

Endodontist

If your teeth need a restorative treatment such as a root canal, then you may be referred to an endodontic center. The endodontist performs higher-end dental surgeries that are more complicated than the average dental procedure. If you suspect that you will need a dental surgery, visit your general dentist to get a referral for treatment. Your dentist will work with the endodontist to provide a diagnosis and x-rays, as well as to follow up with you after the dental surgery. In the case of a root canal, you may need to see both specialists; the endodontist will perform the root canal surgery, and the dentist will place the restorative buildup and crown.

Cosmetic Dentist

In some cases, you may see a specialized cosmetic dentist in order to get crowns and veneers placed. A cosmetic dentist can be a good idea, since these specialists are focused on providing aesthetic care. However, it's not always necessary to see a cosmetic dentist for aesthetic care; your general dentist can also place veneers to help improve your teeth's look.

In short, there are several types of dentists who can handle your specialized dental needs. It's still a good idea to see your general dentist first, before seeking treatment from another type of specialist. The general dentist is the person who will be your best resource for total dental care.

About Marcel and the Dentist

Hi, my name is Marcel. Welcome to my site! I started it to help others learn about children's dentistry. Most of us don't remember dentist trips from our early childhood. Maybe we didn't even really care about our teeth until we started losing baby teeth. In my case, I became interested in children's dentistry as a young father. When my kids were young, I was a student, and our insurance did not cover visits to the dentist. Although my wife and I tried to teach our kids good hygiene on our own, it was difficult. When we we finally able to take them to the dentist, my little girls were scared and didn't know what was going on. Luckily, they appreciate the dentist now that they are older, but their first experiences helped teach me more about the importance of children's dentistry. Hopefully you can learn from my experiences!
