Steps To Take If Your Teeth Are Stained From Smoking

Posted on: 17 October 2018

There are many health issues and problems that smokers face as a result of their smoking habits. One of those many areas of the body affected by smoking is the teeth. When you are a smoker, your teeth are highly prone to staining and discoloration. If your teeth are discolored as a result of smoking, you may be wondering what you can or should do to deal with the issue. Get to know some of the steps that you can take to address your stained teeth. Then, you can start trying to improve the appearance of your teeth as soon as possible.

Brush and Floss Every Day

One of the factors that can cause the smoking stains you experience to be worse is tartar on and in between the teeth. The teeth in general are porous, meaning they can absorb color and other things easily. Tartar, which is what happens when plaque hardens to the teeth, is even more porous than the teeth.

Because of this, if you do not brush and floss properly, you run the risk of deeper and darker stains and discolorations on your teeth. Brush and floss your teeth two times a day, morning and night. Be sure that you are thorough in your flossing as well. You want to get up around the top edges on either side of the space between teeth. This will help keep tartar from forming up around the gum line, causing more staining.

Get Professional Whitening

When you are a smoker, using home whitening strips or trays for your stained teeth is often not especially effective. The whitening agents in the kits that you can buy in the store are designed to be safe for use by anyone. This means that they are designed to be the least caustic to the soft tissues in your mouth.

In a cosmetic dentist's office, on the other hand, your dentist will be able to utilize much more intense and effective teeth whitening agents. They have the skills and the tools to prevent the whitening agents from coming into contact with your gums and tongue, protecting those soft tissues in your mouth. The dentist will also be able to easily remove those whitening agents when the whitening process is complete to further protect your mouth.

The end results of professional whitening will be much whiter teeth than you would get from other whitening options like trays, mouthwashes, strips, or toothpastes.

About Marcel and the Dentist

Hi, my name is Marcel. Welcome to my site! I started it to help others learn about children's dentistry. Most of us don't remember dentist trips from our early childhood. Maybe we didn't even really care about our teeth until we started losing baby teeth. In my case, I became interested in children's dentistry as a young father. When my kids were young, I was a student, and our insurance did not cover visits to the dentist. Although my wife and I tried to teach our kids good hygiene on our own, it was difficult. When we we finally able to take them to the dentist, my little girls were scared and didn't know what was going on. Luckily, they appreciate the dentist now that they are older, but their first experiences helped teach me more about the importance of children's dentistry. Hopefully you can learn from my experiences!
